Sustainable Practices
Aware of the importance of sustainable development, the HTAi Local Organizing Committee has decided to include green practices and Fair Trade products in its Annual Meeting. Here are the sustainable highlights of HTAi 2008:
- We have reduced the use of paper as much as possible. The Preliminary Programme only exists in PDF format and mass emailing is used to promote the event and generate traffic to the website. The book of abstracts will be distributed in electronic format only. The first announcement flyer was printed on recyled paper.
The Conference bag is made of recycled material and manufactured in Québec.
- Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth Hotel provides a meeting structure that encourages maximum waste diversion and environmental awareness for conference delegates.
- Non-organic waste will be separated on site and recycled.
- Eco-conscious hotel cleaning products will be used.
- Partially used amenities and household goods as well as leftover food are distributed to local shelters, charities and food banks.
- Energy-efficient lighting is used in guest rooms and meeting rooms.
- Energy efficient HVAC system is in use.
- Disposable-free food and beverage service is the hotel standard: refillable water jugs instead of bottled water, china instead of disposable items, cutlery instead of plastic items.
- Organic and Fair Trade coffee will be served as well as local and in-season regional cuisine.
We strongly encourage you to do your share while attending HTAi 2008!
General information on the destination

Opening hours
Offices are generally open from Monday to Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Shops are open everyday, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., except Tuesdays and Fridays, from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Health, health insurance and hospitals
Vaccination is not required.
Canadian hospitals and medical services are excellent. The vast majority of hospitals are publicly managed and rates are set by provincial and hospital authorities. Hospital care for non-residents of Canada is charged at a daily rate or on the basis of the medical condition and length of stay. Charges vary from province to province and from hospital to hospital, but generally range from CAN$1,000 to CAN$2,000 a day. It is therefore important to obtain travel health insurance before leaving home, since your regular health insurance might not include coverage outside your country of residence.
Facilities for disabled persons
If you require specific facilities, please notify the Meeting Secretariat.
Passport and Visa Requirements for participants
If you are visiting Canada, a valid passport is necessary. It is the responsibility of the visitor, before entering Canada, to ensure that he or she has the necessary documents, including those for entry into another country or re-entry into his or her own country.
Please visit www.cic.gc.ca for more information.
Electricity
Electrical outlets in Canada provide 110 volts (60 cycles) current, the same as in the United States. If you are travelling from Europe or elsewhere, you will need an adapter to use small appliances designed for a different standard (220/240 V).
Sales Tax
A federal sales tax (5%) and a Québec sales tax (7,5%) are to be added to all advertised prices. Visitors may apply for a tax refund under certain conditions. For more information, visit http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/visitors/.
Tipping
Service is not included in restaurants and it is customary to add a 15% tip to the total. (A quick way to calculate the appropriate amount of the tip is to add the two taxes that appear at the bottom of your bill. It works out to roughly 15%). If you are with a group, a 15% service charge may be automatically added to your bill. Just ask when you are not sure if the tip is included. Taxi drivers, hairdressers, etc. are also normally tipped 15%. Bellhops, porters, doormen, etc. generally receive at least CAD$1 per suitcase or per service rendered. Coffee and food counters often have a tip cup next to the cash register; spare change is always appreciated.
Weather
The weather in Montreal in July is usually sunny with an average temperature of 20ºC (maximum: 26ºC, minimum: 16ºC). Montrealers like to take advantage of the fine weather to enjoy the numerous outdoor cafés and restaurants open from morning to the middle of the night.
